Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark

 
Written by Matthew Robbins and Guillermo del Toro and starring by Guy Pearce, Katie Holmes, and Bailee Madison. This movie was kind a hit last 2011 because of the frightening situation and plots. The movie starts when a little girl named Sally Hurst (Bailee Madison) moves to a mansion in Rhode Island with her dad, Alex (Guy Pearce), and her almost-become-stepmother, Kim (Katie Holmes), after her parents divorced. Long time ago, that mansion was Emerson Blackwood's. But since he suddenly disappeared the mansion became empty ever since. The family doesn't know there's a dark secret on the mansion. The creepy events start since they broke the woods that sealed the basement. And Sally opened the sealed ash pit without even realize that she is going to release monsters.

Actually I feel sad for Sally, her parent has just divorced, and after that she consumed several medicines from the therapist, but her dad doesn't believe her when she tries to explain about the monsters, thinks she's hallucinating, and calls the therapist to help her. And her mom doesn't care about her. While Kim, the one who doesn't related by blood with her, believes her, entertains her, shows her her favorite place in the mansion, and protects her, she even sacrifices herself for Sally until she dies. Unlike Alex, Kim is sincere to Sally and choose to believe Sally when no one does eventhough Sally hates her and misunderstood her in the beginning.

What I love most from this movie is the scenery and the situation, not to mention that Katie Holmes, Guy Pearce, and Bailee play their roles very well. I do really love the pond's scene, when Kim shows Sally her favorite place in the mansion. The scenery there is stunning for me. A big mansion, a neat garden, a beautiful fish pond, everything. The sound also perfect for the creepy scenes. Well, eventhough this film is not as frightening and surprising like Insidious, I still love this film more. Sally is so cute. And this movie has several heart-rendering scenes that attract me more. Well in my opinion, this film isn't just a usual horror film. It also teaches us that Related By Blood Doesn't Make Us Become A Family, Choose Your Family Over Your Career, and Believe In Your Family.

Stop SOPA and PIPA

Right now, the U.S. Congress is considering legislation that could fatally damage the free and open Internet. And most of the webs choose to blackout since they don't want SOPA and PIPA to be voted in.

But for now, I'm going to tell you about SOPA and PIPA

The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), a.k.a H.R. 3261, is a bill that was introduced in the US House of Representatives on October 26, 2011, by House Judiciary Committee Chair Representative Lamar S. Smith  and a group of 12 initial co-sponsors. The bill could expand U.S. law enforcement and copyright holders's ability to fight online trafficking in copyrighted intellectual property.

PIPA is Protect IP Act, introduced on May 12, 2011 by Senators Patrick Leahy, Orrin Hatch, Chuck Grassley. It is a re-written legislation, since the original one failed to pass Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act (COICA) of 2010. If passed, it shall give  U.S. corporations and the government the right to seek affirmative legal action with any website that they see or consider as enabling copyright infringement whether of U.S. origin or not.

Martin Luther Jr King Holiday

2 days ago, is Martin Luther King's Holiday in US. I'm curious about him, so I decided to search about him. Here it is. ^^

Martin Luther King, Jr., born at January 15, 1929. He attended segregated public schools in Georgia, graduating from high school when he's 15 years old then received B. A. degree in 1948 from Morehouse College. In 1951 he was awarded the B.D. Then he enrolled in graduate studies at Boston University, completing his residence for the doctorate in 1953 and receiving the degree in 1955. In Boston he met and married Coretta Scott then she gave birth to two sons and two daughters were born into the family.

In 1954, Martin Luther King became pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. King was, by this time, a member of the executive committee of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Early in December, 1955, he's ready to accept the leadership of the first great Negro nonviolent demonstration of contemporary times in the United States. The bus boycott described by Gunnar Jahn in his presentation speech in honor of the laureate which lasted 382 days. On December 21, 1956, after the Supreme Court of the United States had declared unconstitutional the laws requiring segregation on buses, Negroes and whites rode the buses as equals.

In 1957 he was elected president of the organization formed to provide new leadership for the now burgeoning civil rights movement. The ideals for this organization he took from Christianity, while its operational techniques from Gandhi. Between 1957 and 1968, King traveled over six million miles and spoke over twenty-five hundred times, appearing wherever there was injustice, protest, and action, meanwhile he wrote five books as well as numerous articles. These years, he led a massive protest in Birmingham, Alabama, that caught the attention of the entire world, providing what he called a coalition of conscience. and inspiring his "Letter from a Birmingham Jail", a manifesto of the Negro revolution, he planned the drives in Alabama for the registration of Negroes as voters, he directed the peaceful march on Washington, D.C., of 250,000 people to whom he delivered his address, "l Have a Dream", he conferred with President John F. Kennedy and campaigned for President Lyndon B. Johnson, he was arrested upwards of twenty times and assaulted at least four times, he was awarded five honorary degrees, was named Man of the Year by Time magazine in 1963; and became not only the symbolic leader of American blacks but also a world figure.

At the age of thirty-five he was the youngest man to have received the Nobel Peace Prize and announced that he would turn over the prize money of $54,123 to the furtherance of the civil rights movement.

On the evening of April 4, 1968, while standing on the balcony of his motel room in Memphis, Tennessee, where he was to lead a protest march in sympathy with striking garbage workers of that city, he was assassinated. Observed for the first time on January 20, 1986, it is called Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Following President George H. W. Bush's 1992 proclamation, the holiday is observed on the third Monday of January each year, near the time of King's birthday. On January 17, 2000, for the first time, Martin Luther King Jr. Day was officially observed in all fifty U.S. states

Kisah Tragis Oei Hui Lan

Kisah Tragis Oei Hui Lan  is a true story novel based on a girl named Oei Hui Lan, the second daughter of Oei Tiong Ham, a man who called "The Sugar King from Semarang". Since she's still a little girl she always get a great facility, good food, big house, beautiful clothes, and many more. But eventhough from the outside she looks like a happy person, but from the inside, it's so different. Her father has so many mistresses, while her mother just want his money. Because her ambitious mother, she entered the high class European aristocratic and became part of it. While her husband, Wellington Koo, whom she married just because her mother's ambition was a Chinese's official and one of the successor for PBB. And her sister, Oei Tjong Lan, married to a man named  Ting Liang. Her perfect world ends when her father decided to be with Lucy Ho, her mother's cousin. And since then she lives separately with her father. And there's still more. When her father died, which she believes that he's poisoned by Lucy Ho, he left money for about 8 mistresses and more than 42 children in his will. And Hui Lan, once again, get the biggest amount of money, even more than her mother and her sister. But until now, the intrigue hasn't end. This book shows us that money and wealth can't buy everything. But those 2 things can turn a human into a monster. The most famous quote there is No Feast Last Forever.

Thirteen Reasons Why

I used to read this book, and personally, this book is one of my favorite. This book became the best seller in July 2011. This book is about a girl, named Hannah Baker, who committed suicide for 13 reasons from 13 different people. And after she died, she released one set of 7 cassettes containing the 13 reasons. And her almost be boyfriend Clay Jensen got them too, in the package in front of his door. The message there said that he needs to listen to the cassette until his name come along and after he listen he needs to pass the cassette to the next person. If he choose to throw the cassettes someone whom she asked to, and later be discovered by Clay, will release the second set of cassettes for public. And he keeps listening the reasons one by one, which becomes more and more surprising and heart-wrenching for him, until his name come along. But, what Hannah said in the cassette about Clay is different from what did she said about the other people when she mentioned their names. And after he finishes listening to those cassettes, he found the fact why she chose to end her life and the fact about the people around him in the school. Well I think this book, eventhough it's fiction, somehow it's the same like our society, full of drama and intrigue. This book can change our view about our society, about the world. Thanks to Jay Asher for writing such a cool book like this. And I, will be glad to read this book again. Can't wait til the film is out..!! :D

There's also several softwares to make an animated .gif such as Carpstudio, Photoshop, GIMP, unFreez, and many more. Here's the steps to make an animated .gif in Carpstudio

1. Go to the morph solutions website and download pre-made animations for free
2. Launch CarpStudio from the Morph Solutions Inc
3. Allow CarpStudio to run, Java will ask if you would like to run CarpStudio, you should allow CarpStudio to run
4. Import the downloaded animations into the animation document by using the import sequence animation tool
5. Move the newly imported animations to its desired position by using the arrow tool
6. Export the animation as GIF by choosing Capture->Capture as GIF in the menu bar
7. Click on the stop capture and preview button when you are satisfied with the animation captured
8. Click on the save button and save the file

And this one are the steps to make animated .gif in unFreez

1. Create your source files
2. Drag your source gif files into the converter
3. Ensure that they are listed in the order you wish to animate them in
4. Select the additional options that you want concerning looping and delay between frames
5. Make the animated gif and save it with an appropriate name

Friday the 13th

There's so many rumors about friday the 13th. The origins and many more about it can be found everywhere. Seems like each country has each type of story, which I'm going to give short summary about it.

In Necromancy it is a day dedicated for someone to contact real ghosts like spirits and sometimes demons.

In the Spanish and Greek speaking world, Friday the 13th is NOT considered an unlucky day, but if the 13th day of the month falls another day of the week then it is.

Meanwhile for the history

• Friday the 13th traces back to a Dutch holiday where mischievous children would sneak into graveyards at night and defecate on tombstones.

• In France, Friday the 13th often fell on the day after the Feast of Saint Imbibecus.  Thus the day was often associated with terrible hangovers and poor choices made the night before.

• The Aztecs brutally killed 39,000 in one day on Friday the 13th of August, 1539.  This was done at the request of the recently arrived Hernan Cortez the next day he overthrew their empire.

• One source says the number 13 has been unlucky since the Last Supper of Christ, where thirteen people were in attendance.

• Most skyscrapers do not include a thirteenth floor.  Gregory Johnson bravely included a thirteenth floor in his designs for the Empire State Building in New York.  Three days after its completion, on a Friday, the weight of the building caused it to buckle and it crushed the thirteenth floor.  It has been structurally sound ever since.

• In London’s summer of 1865, seven prostitutes, two flower sellers, three secretaries and a nun were assaulted on Friday July 13th by a crazy man wearing an athletic mask.

• In 1881, a group of New Yorkers started The 13 Club, aimed at removing the superstitious stigma from the number.  At their first meeting on Friday the 13th, all thirteen members walked under a ladder into a room filled spilled salt and broken mirrors.  They all died in a freak accident involving a runaway truck and a rabid wolverine on its way to be put down.

• On Friday June 13th of 1952, Massachusetts Governor Kyle McArthur banned all private automotive transportation on the unlucky day.  Nine overcrowded city buses crashed into each other in downtown Boston.
• Friday the 13th is considered a day of bad luck in English, French and Portuguese-speaking countries around the world, as well as in Austria, Germany, Estonia, Finland, The Netherlands, Belgium, Republic of Ireland, Poland, Bulgaria, Denmark, Iceland, Sweden, Norway, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, and even the Philippines. 

I also heard that woman should not take a shower on Friday the 13th since Jason will come and slaughter them. Well, actually, I don't really into this day, eventhough I believe in ghosts. Just want to inform you anyway.
