Dong Zhi Festival

Dong Zhi Festival, also known as Winter Solstice Festival is one of the most important traditional festivals in China. It is a solar term in Chinese lunar calendar and in the solar calendar, it always falls on December 22 or 23 each year when sunshine is weakest and daylight shortest.

The origin of this festival is as early as more than 2500 year ago, back to the yin yang philosophy of balance and harmony in the cosmos. The festival started to be celebrated since Han Dynasty.

During the day, the family in southern part of China and overseas Chinese community will gather around and celebrate the festival by eating Tang Yuan, or as Indonesian people know 'Onde-Onde', a food made of glutinous rice flour and sometimes colored. While in northern part of China, people typically eat dumplings
